Paper Lantern: Symbol of Asian Culture

11 Jun

When you hear the word “paper lantern” the instant association that comes in mind is of a festival. Paper lanterns are used very commonly in China and Japan especially in Chinatown where they are an important part of the décor. They are hung at the ceiling and at the doorways to attract attention to the businesses. The paper lanterns that float are called sky lanterns which give a beautiful effect in the festivals.

Paper lantern seems like a simple decoration but, it has five distinct classes. The first type is known as Baby’s Bottom which is a miniature version and is often used as Christmas lights. The second type is Rolling Paper which is tall and cylindrical lantern which is often used in restaurants etc. The third type is Tomato Light which is also known as the Big Red. This is the kind you commonly see in Chinatown. It is the classic round lantern shaped like a tomato. The fourth class is Crystal Magic which is a geometric lamps constructed in triangular and square panes. The last class is Budhha’s Gastronomy. This type is extra large and is used to decorate festivals and temples etc.

How to Make a Quilt – Step 1 – Pick and Prepare Your Fabrics

01 Feb

Ok, where do you pick up or buy Fabrics? Some of the best places to pick up fabric includes Wal-mart, Joanns, Hancocks, and your specialty quilt shops. The most convenient and easy way to choose your fabrics would be to buy the pre-matched fabrics that come in little packs.

I haven’t bought very often online fabrics because you can’t see, feel, and make sure the fabric is exacly what you want. Often the picture may be slightly off colored as cameras and computer monitors render colors differently.

You can also find deals thru craigslist, garage sales, second hand stores, estate sales, and so on. The fabrics you get don’t have to be expensive, nor does quilting in general.

You then need to prewash your fabrics. This is a good idea because the dyes from manufacturing have not been set. Be especially careful with red dyed fabrics as these may bleed into white fabrics very easily. So it is a good idea to hand wash your fabric individually in the sink rather than in the wash together. I recommend different products such as Retayne and Shout Color Catcher in my How to make a quilt videos.

If you do wash them together in the washing machine, just make sure you don’t let them sit after the cycle is complete as that is when a lot of bleeding can occur from one fabric to the other.
