Any organization today should have a succession planning process set in place. There are so many uncertainties among jobs today, and organization’s need to plan accordingly so they have the ability to respond to unanticipated events that occur. This ensures that employees’ are engaged in the process, and that they have an interest in the company’s success.

In contrast, there are some issues an organization must deal with when informing employees that they have been targeted as part of a succession planning process. As mentioned already by one of my peers in the discussion forum, a downfall in telling an individual about a potential promotion may lead to unrealistic expectations and implied contracts. Furthermore, by telling certain employees of said possible promotion, I am sure this news would be heard through the ‘grapevine’ among those workers not being targeted.

They may create tension among employees and many may feel that they have been discriminated against by not being considered part of this process. Lastly, there are many employees, especially those working in small companies, which are satisfied with their current position. Everyone does not have the mentality to be a leader or even to move up to a position that requires further training, responsibilities, ect. However, if the kind of individual is told they have been targeted, and then deny this potential opportunity, then there may be a fear by that individual that by refusing the new position may end up being a career ending mistake; the employer may get upset and let the employee go.
