- Doors should be made out of metal or solid wood, most especially, the entry and back doors, and must have deadbolt locks with at least a one-inch bolt.
- For wooden doors, use four-screw strike plates with about three-inch screws that attach securely to their frames.
- Make sure to use secondary locking devices on all doors, most especially the sliding glass doors.
- Make sure that a burglar knows that your home is protected by an alarm or security system. This can be done by putting decals on visible places, as well as placing signs in the front yard.
- Invest in light timers to light your home during the night, while you’re asleep or when you’re going for a vacation, and don’t forget to buy motion-detecting lighting for your backyard and front yard.
